English Reflective Essay

Reflective Essay

In WISE English, I have learned so much and really enjoyed the class itself. I enjoyed the games and also writing the papers about them. I love the class it was very educational and different than any other English class that I had ever been in. In WISE English, we we’re required to play two games, Second Life and Civilization. We we’re also required to write papers on them and we we’re required to write a cultural analysis paper, which was also quite interesting.

When school first started I really didn’t know what to expect out of WISE English or the WISE program period. I was very skeptical of the program and had thought about trying to get out, but I decided that I would try it first, didn’t really have a clue as to what I was getting myself into but I figured what the heck life it about to taking chances. I had heard the program was going to be a lot harder than regular English and that we would be doing a whole lot more writing and on a completely different level. This turned out to be true. In WISE English I learned that writing is not just about writing in the five paragraph format. I was always taught that, that’s how you’re supposed to write a paper but that is so not true. In WISE English learned to take chances when writing, meaning just writing whatever comes off the top of my head about a subject and not just having to plan about everything that I write, and I love that because you shouldn’t have to always plan what you want to write, sometimes it’s better when it just comes from the top of your head.

The one thing that I absolutely love about the WISE program is the fact that History and English are linked together. It makes the work so much easier. I like the fact that English also focused a lot on history. When writing my Cultural Analysis paper for History was a lot easier for me because I had already wrote my paper for English and even though they were two completely papers’ they were about the same thing.

I love WISE English it’s everything I expected and more. I expected for my writing skills to improve and it’s definitely has. I know I still have a lot more to learn but it amazed me how much my writing skills has improved over the course of one semester. I owe a lot of that to my professor. Dr. Kassorla is a wonderful teacher, she’s always so lively and she makes you want to learn. When someone doesn’t have a good attitude towards something they are teaching you, no one wants to listen or learn from that person. You definitely have to be passionate about your job and that Dr. Kassorla is.

I never thought that I’d still be playing games in college but to my surprise I still am, and in class on top of it all. Both games Second Life and Civilization were both exciting games and good learning experiences, but I would have to say that I liked playing Civilization better than Second Life, but that’s just my personal opinion. I didn’t know that playing these games would teach me so much, but it did. I never thought that I’d be able to play a game then write a paper on it. I think this was the most important thing I learned in WISE English so far, because I believe it’s teaching me to learn to write about anything.

I really enjoyed WISE English this semester, and I’m really looking forward to being in the class again next semester and learning more about writing and improving my writing skills. Writing is something we’re going to have to always do and being good at it is never going to be a downfall. Not only am I looking forward to being in WISE English again next semester but I’m looking forward to being in Dr. Kassorla’s class again.
