Second Life

Second Life is a very interesting, fun, and challenging environment. Personally I like the site because it reminds me very much of the Sims games and I’m very much in love with the Sims. I honestly have to say that I don’t believe the site was made for college students. I feel like there are so many other things we could be doing with our time, besides playing a game, please do not get me wrong, it’s very much fun but I feel as though there is no point to it, because I feel like we will not use this in the future.  I also love the Sims but again, it’s just a game and should only be used in spare time for fun.

The structure of Second Life is very challenging, but I really like the fact that you can build and change things. Like the color of tables, and the designs. In Jinn’s Diner I like the fact that everything is spaced out and it’s not all so close together. It really seems like a real life diner, very comfortable. The outside of the Diner is shaped like a pumpkin, but the inside reminds of a diner you would have back in the sixty’s. I really think that’s neat because looking from the outside you wouldn’t expect the sixty’s in the inside. It’s very different, but nice.

There are many places to visit on Second Life but Jinn’s Diner is where I have spent the majority of my time while writing this paper and the activities are extremely limited, but they’re interesting. As I mentioned before of the changing of things, it really interest me so much because I love to make stuff look different. In Jinn’s Diner you can sit down at the tables’ and eat which is very nice and you can also sit with others’ to chat. There are numerous of food choices, so you can pretty much give your avatar whatever it is that you would like for them to have. I also like the fact of changing your body for it look like you want it to look. That’s very interesting to me because I’ve never really been too big on avatar’s and I had no clue that you could do all of that. I guess with it being a duplicate of you, Second Life has all the features of letting you do it.

The tone of Jinn’s Diner is nice and mellow. I love to hear the sound of the birds chirping, it’s peaceful and it just seems like you’re having lunch out of the beach or in a park. I felt so carefree in the Diner. There was no one else in the Diner, so if this was real life it seems like it would be a nice place to enjoy a quiet meal by yourself, or even if you had a partner, it still would be nice and quiet.

Was the site successful? Depending on what you’re trying to get out the site is how you answer this question. In my situation I would have to say yes it was indeed successful. It was successful because Second Life in this case was to open up and try new things. Second Life is meant for us to get to know one another on a different level. It’s a definitely a fun and easy to communicate with our peers. To see how we would dress in another world, the things we try, and how well we can get along in another environment. Even though it’s an avatar I still feel as though we’re all still being ourselves, because in some way or another, whether it’s through the clothes we decided to dress our avatars in, or the food we decide for them to eat, each and every one of our own personalities is going to come out.

If I was to change something about Second Life it would be the complication the site. It’s very hard to get into, and honestly if it wasn’t for my English class I probably wouldn’t have gotten into it just because it’s complicated. On another note I guess it’s a learning process, and it did teach me not to just give up. Since it was something I was required to do, I did it anyway, but now if something is complicated and it’s not a requirement I believe that I’m going to stick with it anyways just to take the challenge.
